On Wednesday (Dec. 7) at 1 p.m. Eastern, the PolarTREC project (Teachers and Researchers Exploring and Collaborating) will host a live video web-chat with scientists conducting winter sampling in the Arctic aboard the US Coast Guard icebreaker Healy. Participation is free, but you must register to access the feed: http://www.polartrec.com/polar-connect/register.

About the expedition:
The expedition is led by WHOI biologist Carin Ashjian and includes a high school teacher from Ohio - Chantelle Rose - who is blogging about the research activities aboard the ship. While onboard, the team will traverse the Bering Sea and break ice to reach the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. During this cruise, the team is collecting some of the first winter information ever collected on the biology, chemistry, and physical oceanography of the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas. In particular, they will be studying a very small crustacean called a copepod. Copepods make up the base of the ocean food chain. In addition to studying the ecology, scientists will be onboard looking at chlorophyll, marine mammals, and birds. Data collected during the cruise will be used to predict the future impacts of climate change on the oceans.
