[SEMCO] Free April Programs at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary

Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is pleased to invite you
to a slate of free adult and children's programming this April.
Every Tuesday, 10 - 11 a.m.
Feeder Central: Converse with a naturalist and spy on the birds at our
feeders while enjoying coffee and pastries inside the nature center.
Every Wednesday, 10 - 11 a.m.
Walk and Talk: Chat with a naturalist while enjoying the beauty of our
walking trails and a breath of fresh air. Dress in layers and wear
comfortable footwear. Backpack babies welcome.
Saturday, April 9
Celebration Saturday: Whale Tales
10:30 - 11:30 a.m. A Whale of a Dirty Job (Adults) Marine biologist and
president of the New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance Krill Carson
spills the secrets of scientists who study whales. Be swept away by the
adventure of following a pod of whales, intrigued by the latest methods
of exploring their biology and behavior, and amazed at the "dirty jobs"
that these studies entail.
10:30 - 11:30 a.m Living Large (Kids ages 4-12) Explore the whale's
skeleton through stories, games, hands-on explorations, and crafts.
Noon - 1:30 p.m. Try Island Hike (All) Hike through our salt marsh to
explore the site of a colonial tryworks where whale products were
processed before being brought to shore.
1:30 - 2:30 p.m. Whale Fever Workshop (Families with kids ages 6-10,
younger siblings welcome)Go back in time to discover how our whaling
ancestors made the most of a whale's bountiful body, and take home your
own scrimshaw creation.
3 - 4:30 p.m. Try Island Hike (All) Hike through our salt marsh to
explore the site of a colonial tryworks where whale products were
processed before being brought to shore

Featured Art Exhibit Lecture
5:30 - 6:30 p.m. The Evolution of the Art, Science, and Politics of the
Horseshoe Crab the Horseshoe Crab
Discover the story behind our current art exhibit, The Ancient Mariner
by Louise Russell (described below) in this discussion Worcester
Polytechinic
Institute Assistant Professor Dr. Daniel Gibson and Brenda Boleyn of the
Horseshoe Crab Conservation Association.
The Ancient Mariner Art Exhibit through May 1
Through charcoal drawings and multimedia installations, local artist
Louise Russell illustrates the natural history of the horseshoe crab and
celebrates the complex role this animal has played in our ecosystem for
350 million years. This exhibit also highlights the overharvesting of
horseshoe crabs for biomedical research and the commercial fishing
industry.
Saturday, April 30
Sanctuary Science Saturday: Horseshoe Crab Tracking
10 - 11 a.m. Horseshoe Crab Tracking for Families Learn how we tag and
track horseshoe crabs that lay eggs on our beaches during the spring and
early summer. Activities will include stories, crafts, hands-on
explorations, and science skill-building activities.! Best for kids ages
6-10. Younger siblings welcome.
1:30 - 3 p.m. Horseshoe Crab Tracking for Adults Project managers Sarah
Martinez and Katherine Terkanian
will introduce you to Cape Cod's horseshoe crabs and our efforts to tag
and track their population during the mating season. Learn how you can
get involved as a volunteer!
Programs are free with membership or sanctuary admission. Participants
are welcome to register in advance or drop-in. Programs are filled on a
