Contract Position

FUNCTIONAL TITLE:       Bay Watershed Education Trainer
LOCATION:                         East Falmouth, MA - Cape Cod
COMMENTS:                       Short Term Contract Position; No Benefits
Compensation:                 $20 per hour, approximately 20 hours per week
START DATE:                    May 1, 2011
END DATE:                          December 31, 2011

This position will support the TOTE (Teachers on the Estuary) program at Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve which is funded through a BWET grant. TOTE is a National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) program that offers field-based teacher professional development at the Research Reserves in support of watershed and estuarine education. Participating Reserves utilize local research, habitats, and professional knowledge. All TOTE programs incorporate common elements such as general estuarine and watershed information and training on NOAA/NERRS national education initiatives.

Through the NOAA Bay Watershed Education Training (B-WET) grant program, NOAA meets its education mandate to provide meaningful environmental education opportunities to students in grades K through 12 as well as related professional development for educators. All B-WET funded projects emphasize sustained, hands-on environmental activities that are aligned with academic learning standards. These meaningful watershed educational experiences combine classroom learning and outdoor activities to connect students with their watershed, reinforce an ethic of responsible citizenship, and promote academic achievement.






POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

 *   Work with Reserve Education Coordinator to plan, prepare for, teach, and evaluate Teachers on the Estuary course (August 8-11 with follow up session November 19).
 *   Work on associated projects such as visualizations of research data, creation of activities, lesson plans, and curriculum, website build out and updates, and materials to advertise and document the program.
 *   Help with logistics of workshop including registration, food, lodging, set up, and recordkeeping.
 *   Present or exhibit about the program at conferences and other venues where teachers are present.
 *   Participate in teaching student MWEE (Meaningful Watershed Education Experience) programs at the Reserve to gain practical experience in activities that will be taught to teachers.
 *   Assist with the Reserve's Needs Assessment of teachers as well as the writing of the Reserve's Education Plan.
 *   Possibly pursue grants to sustain program beyond the terms of the current grant.
 *   Perform other duties related to the objectives of the BWET grant.

SCHEDULE
This contractual position is flexible in hours, which will be agreed upon by both parties.  Contract end date is December 31, 2011 and schedule, albeit flexible, will average out to approximately 20 hours per week.

REQUIREMENTS

 *   Knowledge of estuaries and watersheds and the scientific research process.
 *   Experience teaching about watersheds and estuaries to a variety of age groups in classroom and outdoor settings.
 *   Knowledge of Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, and program and evaluation design.
 *   Comfortable with use of social media, computer graphic design, use of spreadsheets, and accessing on-line data.
 *   Ability to work flexible hours.
 *   Well-organized self-starter able to work collaboratively with a team.
 *   Excellent verbal and written communication skills
 *   Strong environmental ethic
 *   Degree in education preferred.
