The Gulf of Mexico oil spill continues. Almost five years have passed
since hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit the coast of Louisiana. The
rebuilding of New Orleans continues, with much controversy.
In early June, Falmouth will have two Wednesday night programs that
respond to the Gulf. Both of these environmental programs are free and open
to the public. Information: (508) 457-0449.
JUNE 2nd (Wednesday): Volunteers from community and religious groups
continue to work in the rebuilding of New Orleans. Rev. Bob Murphy,
who has been a New Orleans volunteer, will speak about
his involvement in New Orleans with the Sierra Club and the National
Council of Churches. (The two groups work together.) A video about
volunteer activities in New Orleans will be shown.
This program starts at 7:00 pm. The program will take place at the
Unitarian Universalist church, 840 Sandwich Road, in Falmouth. The
building is accessible for people with disabilies.
JUNE 9th (Wednesday): Presentations about marine pollution issues by
Jack Pearce and the Sierra Club's David Dow. A variety of issues will be
discussed, with an update on the Gulf oil spill and its environmental
impact. The Sierra Club's response to the Gulf oil spill will be discussed.
This program will also start at 7:00 pm, at the Unitarian Universalist
church in Falmouth.
These programs have been developed by the Unitarian Universalist church in
Falmouth, to acknowledge World Oceans Day (June 8) and the start of
hurricane season on June 1st.
