Instructor Bios:
C. Diane Boretos
After completing her Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Science at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst Ms. Boretos, began her career in natural resource protection in 1981 as a Conservation Commission member in Falmouth, Massachusetts. She served as the Conservation Administrator in Barnstable during its rapid development in the mid 1980s, implementing the state Wetlands Protection Act Regulations and the local Wetlands Protection By-Law. Diane was also an Assistant District Coordinator for Vermont's Land Use Plan, Act 250, which regulated projects such as ski resort expansions, black bear habitat protection, water supply withdrawal wells and sub-division projects.
For six years Diane was a wetland biologist with the Massachusetts Department of Protection's Division of Wetlands where she specialized in the wildlife habitat regulations, under the state Wetland Protection Act Regulations. She has provided expert testimony on behalf of towns and states on wetland and wildlife issues and has authored numerous articles on wetlands and wildlife.
She is co-author of Stackpole Book's Bird Tracks and Sign and editor of Wetlands by Paul Rezendes. She has extensive experience dealing with protection of endangered species under state and federal regulations. Diane has been tracking wildlife in New England and in the Rocky Mountains for 15 years and has studied with master trackers such as Jim Halfpenny and Paul Rezendes. Diane teaches wildlife tracking programs for adults throughout New England. She is a certified Professional Wetland Scientist and the principal biologist and founder of Call of the Wild Consulting And Environmental Services.
Scott Hecker
Since Scott Hecker first stepped foot on the beaches of Plymouth and Cape Cod in May 1987 as a tern warden for the Massachusetts Audubon Society, his affection for protecting these beach-nesting birds and their and habitats has only increased.
Between 1987 and 2003, Scott served as Director of the Coastal Waterbird Program for Mass Audubon, where he played a vital role developing research, advocacy, and education efforts aimed at protecting threatened terns and plovers. The work of his staff and partners in this endeavor contributed substantially to the state's dramatic rebound of Piping Plovers from 126 pairs in 1987 to 530 pairs in 2002. From 2003 to 2008, Scott continued his work as the Director of the National Audubon Society's Coastal Bird Conservation Program, where he broadened the reach of this effective model to include more threatened coastal bird species and additional states on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.
Since 2008 Scott has served as Executive Director of the Goldenrod Foundation, where he continues to develop research, advocacy, and educational programs with all interested partners to increase conservation of coastal birds and habitats from breeding sites in southeastern Massachusetts to wintering sites elsewhere in the western hemisphere.
