[SEMCO] SEMCO List Spammed

Dear SEMCO members,
It¹s come to our attention that an email was sent out to the SEMCO list
recently that had the subject ³Re: Kathleen Vikner² but was actually spam
that linked to a website for one of spam¹s ³usual suspects.²
It¹s been determined that the spam was apparently part of a virus that has
gained strength lately that attached to a SEMCO member¹s email
address/contact list. Since ³SEMCO at whoi.edu ³was a part of that list, the
virus sent the email to what it viewed as one address but was actually all
of you.
It doesn¹t appear that the virus was one that would have attached to other
members¹ contact lists or address books and that it was an isolated
incident. This is a good reminder, however, to keep your antivirus software
up to date, to not open any links that seem sketchy (many times you can tell
a spoofed link by placing your cursor over the mouse) and to not open any
.exe (executable) files.
We apologize for the inconvenience and for the annoyance that goes along
with these issues. Rest assured that the SEMCO list is monitored carefully
by myself and a member of WHOI¹s CIS Department and we take the integrity of
this great communication tool seriously.
Feel free to email me if you have any questions or concerns.
With regards,
Jeffrey
