The
N.E.E.D. (National Environmental Education Development) Collaborative, in
Truro, has an open position for a skilled Teacher-Naturalist for the 2010-2011
school year.
The
N.E.E.D. Collaborative is a small residential
environmental education program, which is run by three local school districts
Dennis-Yarmouth, Harwich and Falmouth.
The program facility
is located in a retired Coast Guard Station on the Cape Cod
National Seashore. All fifth
grade classes from the
districts participate in the
program for
a three or five day stay.
Average class size is generally 18-24
students. Teaching/trail groups are 6 to 8 students.
Responsibilities:
Teachers develop and present experiential lessons based on the MA Education
Frameworks and centered on the local environments (Beach & Dune, Dune Forest,
Kettlehole pond, Freshwater Swamps) and history (Pilgrims, Shipwrecks &
U.S. Lifesaving Service). Additional lessons include Nightwalk, Group
Dynamics/Community Building, and Pizza Making among others. Staff members also assist with some meal prep
and serving; rotate responsibility for bedtime duties and group supervision
during short bus trips to various natural and historical areas of the outer
Cape; contribute to the overall care and maintenance of the facility as part of
the work week.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree. Experience working
with kids in a residential setting preferred. CPR/First Aid certification
required. Love
of being outdoors in all kinds of weather on the great outer beach of the Cape
Cod National Seashore and
a
background/experience
in natural history
interpretation, marine science, or general ecology extremely
helpful.
Dates:
Early September 2010 - June 2011. One week off at Thanksgiving, two weeks off
at Christmas/New Years. One week off for February Break.
Salary
& Benefits: ~$390 /week plus private room and board for entire contract
period. Health, Life, and Dental Insurance are available. Good food, great
views, generally likable kids, fresh air and plenty of exercise
guaranteed.
