WILD WINTER WORDS: CAPE WILDLIFE CENTER LECTURE SERIES

Cummaquid - The Cape Wildlife Center hosts Wild Winter Words - a lecture
series to engage and delight the Cape's nature lovers. These talks, held
at the Cape Wildlife Center, 4011 Main Street (Route 6A), in the
Cummaquid section of Barnstable, on Thursday evenings, feature wildlife
experts from around the Cape and Islands.

All lectures begin at 7 p.m. and are free. Mark your calendar for these
dates:

January 21 Birds of Cape Cod and the Islands - Explore the Who,
What, When, Where and Whys of the Cape and Island bird scene with
author, newspaper columnist, and public radio commentator Vernon Laux.
His pursuits have taken him to all 7 continents, but his favorite area
remains these shores.

February 18 Gray Seal ID: Smile and Say Fish - Join Seal
biologist, Lisa Sette, from the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies,
as she shares her research using photographs of individual seals to
study the local movements and haul-out site choices of North Atlantic
Gray Seals on Cape Cod shores.

March 18 Hawks of Massachusetts - Many bird species' populations
are declining, while hawk species are increasing. Why? What hawk species
are not doing well? Learn about the hawks that breed in, or migrate
through, Cape Cod, Massachusetts from Paul M. Roberts, founder and a
director of the Eastern Massachusetts Hawks, President of the NorthEast
Hawk Watch, and past Chair and Director of the Hawk Migration
Association of North America.

April 22 Bats: White Nose Syndrome - Six species of
hibernating bats have been affected by this devastating disease, with
the little brown bat most seriously impacted. These insectivores provide
an important ecosystem service to natural and human ecosystems. Dr.
Thomas H. Kunz, Professor of Biology and Director of the Center for
Ecology and Conservation Biology at Boston University, will share his
work and the possible consequences for North America. Dr. Kunz testified
this summer before Congress at a Joint House Subcommittee on White-Nose
Syndrome in bats and appeared on Voice of America to discuss this
disease.
