Please forward to anyone you think may be interested:

NEW BEDFORD, MA (1 February 2010) - The Ocean Explorium's signature speaker series, Ocean Voice, continues on its new night: As of January, Ocean Voice has moved to the first Thursday of each month.

Also new are refreshments, served from 6:15 PM, and a chance to mingle in the Ocean Explorium prior to the talks at 7 PM. Check our website for more information: oceanexplorium.org

On Thursday, February 4, Dr. Neal Cantin, a Postdoctoral Investigator with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Department of Geology and Geophysics and Biology, will present "Can Corals Cope with a Warming Ocean?"

Dr. Cantin explains that "Sea surface temperatures across much of the global tropics and subtropics, where coral reefs occur, have increased between 0.4°C and 1°C in the past four decades. Reef-building corals are extremely sensitive to elevated temperatures and severe coral bleaching events have increased in frequency and severity over the past two decades."

Dr. Cantin will illustrate his talk with images of both healthy and compromised coral structures, which can be compared with the corals growing in the Ocean Explorium's Reef Tank. The vibrant corals and colorful fish in the living exhibits demonstrate the fragile beauty of nature and the need for enhanced stewardship.

We hope you will join us!

Sincerely,
