Secret Life of the Eastern Coyote/Coywolf , Friday, April 16, 6:30 p.m.

Little is known about coywolves in suburban and urban settings, but research
by Marstons Mills resident Jonathan Way is providing unique insights into
these fascinating, highly successful predators. He is the author of Suburban
Howls, a detailed and personal account of his work. Learn more about these

Celebrate Spring on Sandy Neck, Tuesday, April 20, 10 a.m.-12 noon, West
Barnstable
Sandy Neck awakens in April as Ospreys return to rebuild their bulky stick
nests atop poles. Endangered Piping Plovers scour the vast beach for the
ideal spot to scratch their simple nests. Rare Spadefoot Toads rush to
breed in ephemeral pools in the dunes which will soon dry and disappear.
Join Ian Ives, Director of Mass Audubons Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, &
Nina Coleman, Ranger at Sandy Neck, as your guides through the spectacular
landscape of Sandy Neck. Meet at the Gatehouse. Difficulty: Easy. BLT/MAS

Hyannis Ponds Wildlife Walk, Sunday, April 25, 9 a.m. - 10 a.m., Hyannis
Join Naturalist Mark Robinson for a one hour level walk through the urban
wilds of Hyannis: pine woods, sand roads and shallow ponds. Once slated to
be part of the towns industrial park, this 365-acre parcel is now a
state-owned wildlife refuge that protects Barnstables drinking water
supply. Meet at east end of Independence Dr. at the intersection with Mary
Dunn Rd & park on the right.
Family Jam Kitchen Workshop, Sunday, April 25, 2 p.m. 4 p.m., Sandwich
Green Briar Nature Center welcomes BLT members and families to their 1903
Jam Kitchen at a special Apple Pie Jam workshop during April vacation week!
All materials are provided. $28 BLT/Burgess members, $38 non-members per pot
for families with up to 2 siblings. Singles welcome, too! Ages 6 and up.

Bridgecreek Walk, Wednesday, May 5, 9:30 a.m. - 12 noon, West Barnstable
Bridge Creek has a remarkable variety of environments resulting from the
combined effects of past land use and the geographical setting. Explore
this variety with Beth Schwarzmann, geologist, naturalist, and author of The
Nature of Cape Cod. Well see why this area was settled early by the
colonists, and find evidence of the effects they and their descendants had
on the land. Well be on the lookout for some of the unusual plants that
grow here, and whatever birds catch our eye or ear on this 3 mile walk.

Long Beach and the Centerville River Walk, Saturday, May 8, 10 a.m. 12
noon, Centerville
Join Town of Barnstable Conservation Divisions Fred Stepanis and BLTs
Chris Babcock for a two-hour 3 ½ mile walk along Long Beach to the tip of
the barrier spit and back by way of Centerville River trail. Along the way,
coastal dynamics, beach nourishment projects, dredging and Piping Plovers
will be discussed. Hard-soled shoes will make for easier walking on dry
sand. Meet at the Craigville Beach parking lot beach house. Difficulty:
Strenuous.
Cotuit Bay Kayak Tour, Saturday May 15, 9:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m. OR 1:30 p.m.
5:30 p.m., Cotuit
Join Bobby Wilds and/or a naturalist guide of Great Marsh Kayak Tours for an
easy paddle around beautiful Cotuit Bay and a bit of history and bird
watching. Support BLT and have a special 4 hour tour. $60 per person,

Crocker Neck Conservation Area Walk, Saturday, May 15, 10 a.m.-12:00 noon,
Cotuit
Join BLT and Professor Gil Newton, ecologist and author, on an interpretive
walk through the diverse ecosystems of the 97-acre Town owned Conservation
Area in Cotuit. Learn about the salt marsh ecosystem and the flora and fauna
that thrive here. Park at the 2nd gate on Santuit Rd. beyond the Cotuit
Coves rock.
Crocker Neck Book Signing, Saturday, May 15, 1 p.m. 3 p.m., Osterville
After his Crocker Neck walk, purchase Gil Newtons new book The Ecology of
a Salt Marsh: A Tour of Crocker Neck at Books By The Sea, 846 Main St.,
Osterville with a personalized inscription. The profits will benefit the
Barnstable Land Trust.
Shorebirds of Popponesset Walk & Talk, Sunday, May 16, 10 a.m. - 12 noon,
Popponesset Spit, Mashpee
Stroll the sands of Popponesset Spit in search of terns, endangered Piping
Plovers, oystercatchers and their relatives. In this short stretch of
narrow and exposed barrier beach along the southern coast of Cape Cod, you
may encounter the ritualized courtship of the endangered Roseate Terns, see
the camouflaged nests of plovers, and observe many shorebird species
foraging at low tide. Discover how these diminutive creatures survive the

Turtle Island Spring Trek, Sunday, May 23, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Marstons Mills
Search for the elusive endangered Eastern Box Turtle! Explore the 33 acres
of amazing Turtle Island with Bob Prescott, Director of the Mass Audubon
Wellfleet Bay Sanctuary and BLT. It is home to a diverse population of fish
and wildlife. Families are encouraged to bring their school-aged children &
to ask plenty of questions! Meet at upper parking lot of the Prince Cove
Marina.
Meetinghouse Farm Tour, Saturday, May 29, 10 a.m. 12 noon, West Barnstable
Families with children and adults can join Naturalist Debbie Richmond & Judy
Desrochers of Meetinghouse Farm for a spring tour. A warm greenhouse,
blooming rhododendrons, new community garden plots and an artistic yellow
and purple summer garden are all part of the Farms appeal. Well end with
a fun nature activity and healthy refreshments. Located on Rte. 149, north
of Rte. 6 (exit 5) near the historic 1717 Meetinghouse in the Village of
West Barnstable.
Hidden Hyannis, Saturday, June 5, 10 a.m. to 12 noon, Hyannis
A unique walk through diverse territory is lead by Red Bansfield, Barnstable
Land Trusts Land Manager. Explore a beach, a pond, an ancient cemetery and
a backyard vegetable farm which supplies produce for Angell Organics at the
Hyannis Farmers Market. Enjoy the serene side of Hyannis that few get to
explore! Park at the Sea Street Beach parking lot.

Sandy Neck Plover Walk, Tuesday, June 15, 10 a.m. 12 noon, West Barnstable
Discover hidden Piping Plover nests along the front beach with Sandy Neck
Ranger Nina Coleman and BLT on a one-mile hike through the dunes of Sandy
Neck. Explore barrier beach ecology, learn about the Piping Plovers
life-cycle and the conservation measures being taken to protect these
endangered shorebirds. Please wear sturdy hiking boots since we will be
walking through sand and over uneven terrain. Difficulty: Strenuous
Smiths Dock Sanctuary Walk, Saturday, June 19, 1 p.m. 3 p.m., West
Barnstable
Explore this peaceful 5 acre spot with impressive views of the Great Salt
Marsh with Naturalist Debbie Richmond, and her fellow board members of the
Orenda Wildlife Land Trust. Timed for low tide, conditions will allow
access onto the salt marsh. Wonderful birding opportunities and up close
viewing of salt marsh plants will be a highlight of the trip. This sanctuary
is one of only 17 places within Massachusetts that is habitat for the
threatened Northern Diamondback Terrapin Turtle. Park at the end of Meadow
Lane.
Meadow Point Walk, Sunday, June 20, 10 a.m. -12 noon, Cotuit
Explore this 28 acre crown jewel at the southern-most tip of Barnstable
with BLT member Bob Livingston. Enjoy the beauty and serenity of this meadow
fringed by upland and bordered by Popponesset Bay. Bring a snorkel, mask
and water shoes if youd like to participate in an optional swim. Meet at
250 Vineyard Road.
In Search of Diamondback Terrapins on Sandy Neck, Tuesday, July 13, 10 a.m.
12 noon
In summer, rare Diamondback Terrapin emerge from the Great Marsh to lay
their eggs in the dunes of Sandy Neck. Join Ranger Nina Coleman and Mass
Audubon Long Pasture Sanctuary Director Ian Ives as we search for signs of
nests and tracks of these amazing and mysterious turtles and learn about the
headstart program helping the tiny terrapins. Meet at Sandy Neck Gatehouse.

Sandy Neck Flora & Fauna Hike, Tuesday, August 17, 10 a.m.-12 noon, West
Barnstable
Hike 1.5-miles through Sandy Necks Great Marsh and sand dunes and explore
barrier beach flora and fauna with Sandy Neck Park Manager and Naturalist
Nina Coleman and BLT. Youll learn about ongoing efforts to protect and
restore these and other sensitive natural communities. Park at the
gatehouse. Parking is free for participants. Wear sturdy hiking boots. Sand
and uneven terrain. Difficulty: Strenuous.
Parker River Kayak Tour, Saturday, September 11, 9:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m. OR
1:30 5:30 p.m.,Yarmouth
Join Bobby Wilds and/or a naturalist guide of Great Marsh Kayak Tours for an
easy paddle around Parker River and a bit of history & search for osprey,

Crocker Neck Fall Walk, Sunday, September 12, 10 a.m.-12 noon, Cotuit
Join Gil Newton, professor, ecologist, and author on an interpretive walk
through the diverse ecosystems of the 97-acre Town-owned Crocker Neck
Conservation Area in Cotuit. Learn about the salt marsh ecosystem and the
flora and fauna that thrive at Crocker Neck. Park at the second gate of the
Conservation Area on Santuit Road beyond the Cotuit Coves rock.
Cotuit Bay Kayak Trip, Tuesday, September 14, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Cotuit
Paddle around Cotuit Bay, North Bay & West Bay with Mass Audubon Sanctuary
Director Ian Ives. Highlights include fall bird migrants and the natural
history of the harbor. Actual paddling will be 2.5 hours. Park at Ropes

A Walk on the Wild Side of Heritage Plantation, Saturday, September 25, 9:30
a.m. 11:30 a.m., Sandwich
Families of all ages are invited to see the wild side of Heritage Museums &
Gardens as we ignore the paved walkway and hike the nature trails past bogs,
through the forest and along Shawme Pond. A perfect way to celebrate

Turtle Island Fall Trek, Saturday, October 23 , 11 a.m. 1 p.m., Marstons
Mills
Explore one of Barnstables special places, Turtle Island, with Red
Bansfield, BLT Land Management Coordinator, and Holly Hobart, BLT member and
history buff, which juts out into Prince Cove just below the mouth of the
Marstons Mills River. We will then walk up Prince Avenue to view several
interesting and historically important homes dating from the days when this
area supported a thriving fishing, shell fishing and cranberry industry.
Meet at the upper parking lot of the Prince Cove Marina.
