"Cape Friendly Farming: Grow Local, Buy Local, Eat Fresh" Workshop at
the Waquoit Bay Research Reserve

The Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is hosting a
gardening workshop on Thursday, March 19th from 7:00pm - 9:00 pm at the
Visitor Center on Route 28 in E. Falmouth. The workshop will highlight
where to buy and eat local foods on Cape Cod as well as techniques on
organic gardening. Participants are invited to arrive between 6:30 and
7:00 to check in, take a look at the Reserve's visitor center, and
sample some locally grown snacks.

Jessie Gunnard, Coordinator of the Buy Fresh, Buy Local Cape Cod
Program, Cape Cod Cooperative Extension, will reveal where Cape Codders
can purchase and eat foods that are grown locally and highlight the
benefits of local foods. Stan Ingram will teach participants about the
process of growing their own food-from soils and seeds, to working with
the season's challenges of weather, diseases and insects; right through
to a healthy harvest. He'll also give tips on extending the growing
season. Stan, who grew up working on truck farms in Southeast
Massachusetts, was the Garden Manager at New Alchemy Institute in the
1980s. Stan recently returned to the Cape from a few years growing his
own food in Maine to start a Community Supported Agriculture program at
Coonemessett Farm in Hatchville and is presently the field manager
there. Joan Muller, Education Coordinator at the Waquoit Bay Reserve
will introduce the program with an overview of the environmental
benefits of organic gardening and farming.

The program is free and sponsored by the Reserve, the Buy Local, Buy
Fresh Cape Cod program, and the MA Department of Conservation and
Recreation. Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is located
at 149 Waquoit Highway/Route 28 in Waquoit. Please register at
