Local astronomer introduces people to the beauty, myths and science of the night sky.
Workshop on summer constellations scheduled for June 23 at Mass Audubon.
South Wellfleet, MA. - Truro resident Paul Cézanne is captivated by the night sky. On any clear night you can find him gazing at stars and planets through his telescope or binoculars. And Cézanne will be sharing his passion and knowledge of summer constellations with the public in an indoor/outdoor workshop scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, 8:30 p.m. at Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
Paul Cézanne has been looking up at the night sky since he was a child living in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Thrilled by Neil Armstrong's moon-walk, he was determined to learn more about the twinkling world known as the "outer space." While his career path as a software engineer led him down a different road, he continues to pursue his interests in astronomy through local amateur groups. And Cézanne is equally passionate about education. Since moving to the Cape, he has been active in the Cape Cod Astronomical Society and gives presentations on astronomy all over the region. Occasionally you'll also see him on a weekend night on MacMillan Wharf in Provincetown inviting passers-by to look at the moon through his scope!
In the June 23 workshop at Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, Cézanne will introduce participants to how the sky moves through the night and the seasons; help identify the summer constellations-both how to spot them and to their history and mythology; explain our planet's position in the Milky Way; and go outside (weather permitting) to find summer constellations including the Big Dipper, Leo, Hercules, Cygnus, the Summer Triangle, Scorpius, and Sagitarius.
The program fee is $22 for Mass Audubon members and $24 for non-members. Advance registration is required. For more information or to register contact Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary at 508-349-2615.
