LONG-TAILED DUCKS OF NANTUCKET
Lecture by Simon Perkins, Mass Audubon Field Ornithologist

Thursday, February 5, 1 p.m.
At Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary

New technology has greatly expanded our knowledge of birds and their
life histories. Our understanding of long-tailed ducks and their nightly
forays into Nantucket Sound is starting to take shape with research
using satellite tags implemented by Mass Audubon to evaluate the
possible impacts of an offshore wind farm on sea ducks that use this
area in winter.

In this special lecture, Mass Audubon Field Ornithologist Simon Perkins
will focus on the information gained from this satellite work, including
information on the movements, historical perspective, and future of
long-taileds and other sea ducks in the Sound.

The talk is scheduled for Thursday, February 5 at 1 p.m. It will be held
at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. The fee is $3 for Mass Audubon
members and $5 for non-members. Refreshments provided. No
pre-registration is required, but helpful.

This talk "Long-Tailed Ducks of Nantucket" is the second in a series
entitled "Birds of Cape Cod: Past, Present, Future." With the Wellfleet
Bay Wildlife Sanctuary celebrating its 50th anniversary, this series of
lectures reflects on the nature of bird populations and conservation
efforts in the past and present with an eye towards future predictions
and concerns. Other talks in the series include:

March 21, 7 p.m.	Hawk Population Trends by Paul Roberts,
Eastern Mass. Hawk Watch
April 17, 7 p.m.	Massachusetts Ospreys by Alan Poole,
Cornell Lab of Ornithology
May 28, 7 p.m.	Changes in Cape Cod Birds by Wayne Petersen,
