Squid in Nantucket Sound: Biology, Ecology and the Fishery

*The longfin inshore squid (**Loligo pealeii**) is a fascinating creature
that is abundant*

*in Nantucket Sound during the spring and summer, forming the basis for a*

*seasonal fishery. Owen Nichols, director of the* PCCS- *Marine Fisheries*

*Initiative, will discuss the biology, life history and distributional
ecology of this*

*amazing and delicious animal, with a particular focus on the history and
present*

*status of the squid fishery. The implications of oceanography and climate
on the*

*distribution and abundance of the species and current research on squid
ecology*
*conducted in collaboration with local fishermen will be discussed.*

*ABOUT PCCS*
Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies is a nonprofit organization
dedicated to preserving marine mammals and ecosystems in the Gulf of Maine
through research, education, public policy initiatives and responsible
