The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster presents the 2009
Field Guide Training Course, consisting of eight sessions from 9 am to 3
pm, starting Thursday, March 19 and ending Thursday, May 7.
Field guides are prepared to take out school groups in the spring and
fall, and lead tourists during the summer. Additional opportunities
include use of the Clarence Hay Library for reference and field guides
and computer DVDs for review; Museum programs for self-development;
Friends of CCMNH programs, bibliographies from field guide presenters,
Museum store books and the Mudflat Mania! Course. Special opportunities
are also available as Museum volunteers.
The Field Guide Course will train participants in:
1) the ecosystems of the CCMNH trails;
2) identification and relationships of the plants and animals;
3) the historical and geological background of the Stony Brook
Valley;
4) an understanding of the relevance of field walks and museum
exhibits to the Massachusetts Science Curriculum Framework and school
learning standards.
The morning sessions will concentrate on information about the
natural world and techniques for being a successful field guide. There
will be special speakers, activities and field walks in the afternoons.
This is an opportunity to share your love of nature and continue the
learning that never ends. Participants should bring lunches and
appropriate clothing for outdoor weather.
