The Dark Side of the Loon

A documentary film by Gail Osherenko

Special showing at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary

Free with sanctuary admission

Saturday, December 5, 1 p.m.

Join us for a special showing of the documentary "The Dark Side of the
Loon" which highlights issues facing loons on their wintering grounds on
both Atlantic and Pacific coasts. This recent film by Gail Osherenko is
a great tool for learning about loons in the "off-season," threats to
loons, conservation measures needed, careers in conservation biology,
and veterinary medicine. Of local note, Dr. Mark Pokras of Tufts
Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and his work to understand loon
mortality is featured in the documentary. The film is 45-minutes in
length. This showing is free with sanctuary admission.

You can also extend your day and stick around for the 2 p.m.
presentation by Drs. Julie Ellis and Sarah Courchesne from Tufts and
SEANET (The Seabird Ecological Assessment Network) and their related
work on assessing seabird mortality along the eastern seaboard. The talk
will highlight the recent die-offs of Common Eiders and provide
information on volunteer opportunities. This presentation is free.
