"Where Have All the Herring Gone?" (in English and Portuguese)
Walk along the Quashnet River (meet at Waquoit Bay Reserve VC)
Waquoit Bay Reserve will host a presentation entitled "Where Have All
the Herring Gone?" on Sunday, April 19 from 2-4 pm. The program will
begin in the Reserve Visitor Center with a short introduction after
which participants will carpool to the Quashnet River Trailhead on
Martin Road, just a few minutes away, for an easy walk to view the
herring habitat first hand. Scientist Rita Oliveira Monteiro will lead
the walk in both English and Portuguese.
Rita will include information about the lives of our local herring and
her research as she explores the questions, "Why has the herring fish
population dropped so much in the last fifty years? How is what we do on
the land connected to the lives of these fish?" She will also share
stories from her life as a researcher. Ms. Monteiro is a graduate
student at the State University of New York College of Environmental
Science and Forestry, working at the Ecosystems Center at the Marine
Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole with Professor Ivan Valiela. She is
a NOAA fellow studying at Waquoit Bay Reserve through the National
Estuarine Research Reserve System graduate research assistant program. A
native of Portugal, Rita is comfortable speaking in Brazilian Portuguese
and will offer the program in both English and Portuguese.

program is free and sponsored by the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine
