Celebrate Earth Day with the Montessori Middle School of Cape Cod and Coonamessett Farm

Celebrate Earth Day with the Montessori Middle School of Cape Cod (MMSCC) and Coonamessett Farm on Sunday, April 19 from 11 AM to 3 PM at Coonamessett Farm in Falmouth.

On April 22, 1970, 20 million people across America celebrated the first Earth Day and now it is celebrated annually around the globe.   The students from the Montessori Middle School of Cape Cod and the staff of Coonamessett Farm have planned a variety of activities which celebrate our planet and Earth Day here on Cape Cod.  The Earth Day activities at Coonamessett Farm will focus on local food production and energy conservation and include games and crafts for children.

The Earth Day events at the farm include:

a workshop on home vegetable gardening

tours of the farm’s hydroponic projects with instructions on making your own system

hands-on pruning instruction

a demonstration of vermicomposting (worm composting)

face painting

bird feeder and chipmunk nest making from eco-friendly materials

Earth Day crafts using recycled materials

tips and demonstrations for going ‘green’ at school, work, and home

touring the farm and meeting its unique animals

Movies will be shown throughout the day in the Education Center, including the following titles:

A Crude Awakening—The Oil Crash by Basil Gelpke (Noon)

The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil (2 PM)

The 11th Hour by L. Dicaprio (3 PM)

Admission to the farm is free for members and for non-members a day pass cost $8 for adults and $6 for children (4-11).  Membership to the farm for a family of four for a year is $40.

The Montessori Middle School of Cape Cod, in collaboration with Coonamessett Farm, provides a program of rigorous academics and experiential learning. The combination of Dr. Maria Montessori's philosophy and the unique location of the school help to foster personal growth, responsibility, and self-confidence. The farm setting and its surrounding environment allows students to study topics beyond the classroom and learn through experience. Students gain a respect for the environment and a true sense of their place in the world with this opportunity to directly apply their academic studies in land-based projects including agriculture, animal husbandry, and boat building. Students gain the skills, the education, the unique experience, and the confidence they need to become successful in high school and beyond.  http://www.capecodmontessori.org
