Happening Soon: Professional Development Opportunity for educators -- a
half-day Saturday workshop on Cape Cod
WHOI will offer a workshop for teachers on Sat., Dec. 6th, from 10:00am
to 1:45pm,
at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Exhibit Center, Woods Hole, MA.
The topic: Arctic climate change -- What is happening in the Arctic?
from physical and biological perspectives.
Presenters:
1. physical oceanographer Mary-Louise Timmermans who will talk about
her research on currents in the Arctic, plus information from a recent
international symposium on climate and sea ice held at WHOI in early
November: what do we know about ice in the Arctic, what do we still need
to determine, and how?
2. biological researcher Phillip Alatalo, participant in a large
program monitoring the Beaufort Sea ocean ecosystem, who will speak
about the links between nutrients, phytoplankton and zooplankton,
migrating Bowhead whales, and Inuit subsistence hunters in the Arctic
Ocean, how climate may be affecting the food chain, and how biological
oceanography is carried out in the Arctic.
Schedule (provisional)
Sign-in and breakfast: 9:30-10:00
First speaker: 10:00-11:15
Second speaker: 11:15-12:30
Lunch 12:30-1:15
1:15-1:45 (approximately) -- Tour lab and instruments used to
sample plankton in the Arctic; view images collected with the Video
Plankton Recorder; see how data are processed and analyzed.
