Meeting Wastewater Treatment Needs: Options, Opportunities and Lessons
As towns embark on developing comprehensive wastewater management plans
(CWMPs) to help meet nitrogen TMDL limits and restore coastal water
quality, it is recognized that there is no one solution that will fit
every communities needs. Instead, there are a number of technologies
and treatment options spanning decentralized and centralized management
approaches that communities could potentially employ as part of their
overall wastewater management strategy. To help address questions
concerning how these various solutions compare and complement each
other, the Waquoit Bay Reserve will launch a monthly workshop series for
decision-makers in June. The intent is to examine the technical,
environmental, social and financial issues associated with each of these
options and provide a forum for information sharing and discussion.
Developing and adopting a CWMP is a lengthy complex process which
involves weighing many different concerns and ultimately arriving at a
preferred plan of action that suits a community. This series will bring
relevant information to those involved in the planning process and help
inform decision-making. The targeted audience includes municipal
officials, wastewater committees, planning boards, health boards,
conservation commissions, public works staff and consultants.

Innovative and Alternative Onsite Septic Systems and the Nitrex
Permeable Reactive Barrier
Thursday, June 12
Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve
9:00 - 12:30
This workshop will examine the viability of innovative and alternative
onsite septic systems (I/As) for meeting TMDL limits for nitrogen on
Cape Cod. Presentations will address how these systems function and
perform as well as maintenance and management issues. Wastewater
experts and engineering consultants will share perspectives on both the
advantages and disadvantages of these systems and where and how they are
most appropriately used. In addition, the session will feature a
presentation on the Nitrex groundwater treatment system and examine its
effectiveness for reducing nitrogen loading in coastal areas. Research
on this system has been ongoing at the Waquoit Bay Reserve.
8:00 - 9:00 Sign-in and Networking Breakfast
9:00 - 9:15 Welcome, Introductions and Announcements
9:15 - 10:15 Performance and Management of Nitrogen-Removing Onsite
Septic Systems
George Heufelder, Barnstable County Department
of Health and the Environment
10:15 - 10:30 Coffee Break
10:30 - 11:15 The Nitrex Permeable Reactive Barrier System
Ken Foreman, Marine Biological Laboratory
11:15 - 12:30 Panel Discussion: Opportunities and Drawbacks of Using
I/A systems to Address Wastewater Management Needs
Panelists will include engineers from consulting firms with experience
working on Cape Cod
12:30 Wrap-up
There is no cost to attend the workshop but registration is required.
