Award-winning Filmmaker and her PBS Nature Film kick off Annual Summer
Lecture Series at Mass Audubon in Wellfleet
"Bayside Talks" held every Wednesday 7:30 p.m. in July & August at
Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary
July 9 Crash: A Tale of Two Species
Local filmmaker Allison Argo shares her
recent PBS Nature film that tells the fascinating story of the
relationship between horseshoe crabs and the red knot, a shorebird in
serious decline.
July 16 Where Have all the Herring Gone?
Atlantic Herring form the basis of the
ocean food chain, but overfishing threatens them and all that eat them.
Lara Slifka, of Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen's Association will
speak on this subject and efforts to safeguard the fishery.
July 23 Tagging Along with Leatherback Sea Turtles
Kara Dodge, UNH Ph.D. candidate, will
share her investigations on leatherback natural history, movements and
dive patterns using satellite telemetry, and discuss threats to their
conservation.
July 30 Birds to Watch: The Loss of Common Species and their
Habitats
Learn about the common species of birds
that are "quietly" experiencing dwindling populations. Mass Audubon's
Wayne Petersen will bring attention to these birds and the threats they
face.
August 6 Disentangling Whales
Scott Landry of the Center for Coastal
Studies will highlight the successful disentanglement techniques used to
free over 70 large whales from life threatening entanglements.
August 13 Restoring the Wellfleet Oyster
Learn about oyster restoration projects
in the New England region and how they might apply to a proposed project
in Wellfleet. Boze Hancock of The Nature Conservancy is the speaker.
August 20 Golden Wings & Hairy Toes
The life history and environmental
challenges facng New England's most endangered wildlife are the subject
of Todd McLeish's new book. Copies will be available for sale and
signing.
August 27 Secret Lives of Coastal Skunks
Luanne Johnson's doctoral research
focuses on the behavior and population dynamics of striped skunks and
their impact on nesting coastal waterbirds, including the piping plover.
Cost for Lectures is $7 for Mass. Audubon member and $9 nonmembers.
