Press Release July 2, 2008

Since 1975 the annual butterfly count has been held in the U.S., and
now in Canada and Mexico as well. Each count area is a circle 15
miles in diameter and the count is a one-day census of all
butterflies observed within that circle. The count promotes interest
in butterflies, and provides results useful to scientists who are
monitoring butterfly populations and habitats.

Knowledgeable butterfliers are needed, and those who want to have
the experience to get started are also welcome. Please bring
binoculars if you have them, wear long pants and socks, and bring a
light lunch.

Participants are encouraged to join in any and all of the four
counts listed below.

To quote the NABA press release about these counts: "Butterflies
are one of the most beautiful elements of the natural world, and
scientists now recognize that they can also serve as important
indicators of the health of ecosystems." The Counts have been held
annually in North America since 1975, first administered by Xerces
Society, and now by the North American Butterfly Association. In
2007, 483 counts were held in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The Count
results are an important database for monitoring the size and
distribution of our butterfly populations. The nominal cost of
participation is $3, which supports NABA's administration of the
program and publication of the results.
