M. Smith at 1:30. Friends members/free, guests/$3
Stephen M. Smith will talk on the changes that have occurred in Cape Cod
salt marshes over the last 60 yrs., including salt marsh dieback. He will
discuss 5 categories and talk about underlying mechanisms and causes.
1. tidal creek widening and reduction in low marsh area associated with low
marsh vegetation losses
2. tidal creek widening in riverine systems associated with
tidal inlet changes
3. marsh stability
4. high marsh losses (landward retreat) with replacement by un-vegetated
mudflats
5. high marsh losses balanced by low marsh encroachment
Stephen M. Smith, Ph.D., is a Plant Ecologist with the National Park Service
at the Cape Cod National Seashore.
