COMMUNITY CELEBRATION FOR EARTH DAY SEASON

Cape Cod will host an unusual environmental event, on Saturday, April 26th.

The Falmouth Service Center, in the town of Falmouth, will have an "open
house" at the Center's community garden.... Everybody is invited.... Garden
work with start at 8:30 am.... At noon, there will be a barbecue with
brief presentations about the community
garden and community strategies for helping to protect the coastal
environment.

The community garden at the Falmouth Service Center is the largest of Cape
Cod's community gardens.... It's an organic garden..... Families work
together to raise food and flowers. Much of the produce is donated to the
Center, to help support the community food pantry.... What results is an unusual
program that helps the environment while assisting low-income families....
Most of the work is done by local volunteers.

Organic gardening and landscaping helps to reduce local pollution. Helping
area residents to grow their own food benefits the coastal environment in
several ways. Individuals develop a sense of community, they learn about
sustainable agriculture, and they reduce their dependence on "imports." In
October, the gardeners share a harvest dinner.

The Sierra Club's Cape Cod and Islands Group will provide a special cake and
other refreshments, to honor the organic garden project in Falmouth. This
year, the Falmouth Service Center is celebrating its 25th anniversary....
The Center is located at 611 Gifford Street, in Falmouth.... TELEPHONE:
