Reserve Offers Hands-On Program on Research at South Cape Beach
The Waquoit Bay Research Reserve is inviting the public to see first
hand what a day in the life of a researcher holds. Friday, April 11
from 9:00-11:00am kicks off an exciting year of programs celebrating the
Reserve's 20-year anniversary. Researchers from the Reserve highlight
several of the ongoing projects at South Cape Beach in Mashpee in this
hands-on program. Participants will learn about the ecology of the area,
get a chance to classify algae, identify salt marsh vegetation, measure
the dunes and get some insight into the salt marsh restoration project
currently underway. No experience is necessary but attending this
program will give participants a taste of the life of a researcher. The
interactive format will allow plenty of time for questions and
discussion.
Liz Bonk, Research Assistant, Morgan Potter, Research Intern, and Andrew
Tweel, Stewardship Intern, who have been working at the Reserve over the
past year on several projects, will lead the program. Participants
should meet at South Cape Beach State Parking Lot in Mashpee at 9:00 am
and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (WBNERR) is a living
laboratory and community resource at one of the Northeast's most studied
estuaries. Slated for development, most of the Reserve lands were bought
by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at the urging of the Citizens for
the Protection of Waquoit Bay (CPWB) in the early 1980's. In 1988, the
Reserve was designated a National Estuarine Research Reserve. Twenty
years later, the Reserve continues to work with partners to preserve
land and water and related ecosystems, investigate
