Attention teachers!
<>
Here is some information about a great program related to teaching about
weather and climate. The free program, called "Pulse of the Planet" will
take place this Saturday September 22 from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Woods
Hole Oceanographic Institution, where there will be a live link-up to
the presentation, "Stormin' and Warmin': Weather and Changing Climate in
New Jersey" streamed from Liberty Science Center near New York City.
This is a family program, so teachers may bring children or students.
Best of all, teachers and students will be able to submit questions to
be answered by climate expert David Robinson as part of the
presentation. The program is being offered free by WHOI as part of an
initiative promoting distance learning. The high-tech live streamed
presentation will be fun and is sure to grab the attention of your
children and students! <>
There is an additional, optional session for teachers, including lesson
plans and teaching ideas, that will be broadcast right after the
presentation from 11:00 - 1:00. Please contact Andrea Thorrold
athorrold at whoi.edu <mailto:athorrold at whoi.edu> (508) 289-3478 by
Thursday Sept 20 to register or for more information (space is
limited!). <>

<>September 22nd, 2007: Stormin' and Warmin': Weather and Changing
Climate in New Jersey <>
Public Lecture: 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Few natural events underscore human insignificance like the rise and
fall of coastal storms. They are news before they happen, while they are
happening, and sometimes for years after. David Robinson, New Jersey 's
State Climatologist, will describe on how scientists use observations in
the ocean and atmosphere to understand and predict coastal storms.

Dr. David Robinson, Rutgers University Professor and State
Climatologist for NJ
Professor Robinson's research interests are in applied climate,
especially related to New Jersey , and in climate dynamics and change,
particularly focused on global snow cover. He currently chairs a
National Research Council panel, sits on the American Meteorological
Society's Applied Climatology Committee, is a member of the lead climate
advisory committee for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration, and has recently joined Liberty Science Center 's
Learning and Teaching Advisory Committee. Dave has chaired the American
Meteorological Society's Polar Meteorology and Oceanography Committee,
and was recently president of the American Association of State
Climatologists. <>
Professional Development: 11:00 am -1:00 pm
This session will focus on the intimate connection between our weather,
climate, and the ocean. We will provide relevant lesson plans and
classroom resources that are standards based and focus on the nature of
science. Please contact Andrea Thorrold at athorrold at whoi.edu
