CELEBRATION OF RACHEL CARSON'S BIRTHDAY

The 100th anniversary of Rachel Carson's birth will be celebrated on Sunday
morning, May 27, at the Unitarian Universalist church in Falmouth. The
celebration will take place after the
9:30 am Sunday service. All people are invited to this centennial event.

Ms. Carson was born in 1907 in Pennsylania. In 1929, she arrived at the
Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole to begin her postgraduate studies.
Later, she began her career as one of the first women to be employed as a
scientist by the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries.
"Ray" Carson wrote a series of popular books about ocean subjects during the
1940s and
1950s. However, she is best-known because of her 1962 book "Silent
Spring."

In 1999, "Time" magazine identified Rachel Carson as being among the one
hundred most important people of the 20th century. Clearly, "Silent
Spring" was one of the most influential books of the 1900s. It brought thousands
of Americans into the environmental protection movement and it raised new
concerns about food safety and other subjects.

By a happy coincidence, the Unitarian Universalist church in Falmouth was
established on May 27th. Many of the members are involved in Woods Hole
research and administrative activities. This year, the congregation's May 27th
service will include comments on church history and on Rachel Carson's
importance. Rev. Ken Warren of Barnstable and Rev. Bob Murphy of Falmouth will be
the two major speakers.... Rachel Carson's birthday celebration will follow
the Sunday morning service. For information, phone (508) 457-0449.

The Unitarian Universalists sponsor an annual "Rachel Carson Harvest
Dinner," in October.
The dinner honors Ms. Carson's memory by recognizing "earth friendly"
gardening, farming, and landscaping on Cape Cod. Special thanks is given to
volunteers who are involved with organic community gardening. All of the
money raised at the Rachel Carson Harvest Dinner is distributed to the community
food pantries that serve needy families in Sandwich, Mashpee, Falmouth, and
Bourne.... Oct. 13 is the date for this year's dinner.
