Greetings!

Join Woods Hole Sea Grant for its annual series of lectures titled
"Oceans Alive: Plain Talk on Current Topics in Marine Science Presented
for the General Public." The talks are free of charge and are designed
to inform and involve the general public in relevant and timely marine
science issues. This year's series will feature the following presentations:

Tuesday, April 17, 7:00 p.m.
Whale Conservation Research in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine
Sanctuary
The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary is an area that is
intensely used by endangered whales and commercial fishing and shipping
interests. Research by the Sanctuary and its collaborators is targeted
at understanding patterns of whale and human activity with the goal of
minimizing interactions. Join David Wiley, Sanctuary research
coordinator, as he presents results from humpback whale tagging studies
and discusses a project to move the shipping lanes in the Sanctuary.

Tuesday, April 24, 7:00 p.m.
A Coastal Current in Winter: Exploring Coastal Ocean Cooling with a
REMUS Autonomous Underwater Vehicle
Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are an important new tool for
studying ocean processes. Join Glen Gawarkiewicz, associate scientist in
WHOI's Physical Oceanography Department, as he describes experiments
aimed at studying the formation of cold, dense water east of Cape Cod
using a REMUS AUV. Gawarkiewicz will also talk about ocean circulation
east of Cape Cod, fresh water transport, and how AUVs will be used in
future coastal observatories to look at long-term changes in coastal
processes.

Tuesday, May 1, 4:00 p.m.
Young Scientists Present: Winning Science Fair Projects
In a science town, the scientists come in many shapes and sizes, and in
a wide range of ages. Join us for special presentations by local high
school students from Falmouth Academy and Falmouth High School as they
discuss their winning science fair projects.
Please note the special time for this presentation.

Presentations are held in Redfield Auditorium, Water Street, Woods Hole
(free parking for evening lectures is available in lot opposite
auditorium; look for on-street meter parking for afternoon
presentation). Admission is free.
