Ms. Ingrid Biedron
Bioacoustics Research Program
Cornell University
Whales in the Gulf of Maine: Biology, Conservation and Research.
Join us for an exciting presentation by Ingrid Biedron, a doctoral
candidate from Cornell University. Ingrid will present her work on the
acoustics of endangered baleen whales that live and feed in the waters
off New England. Learn about new technologies being used to record
whale sounds, including pop-up recorders and recording buoys with
cell-phone transmitters. These advances are allowing scientists to
listen in on whale conversations hundreds of miles offshore. Large
endangered whales such as the humpback, finback and North Atlantic
right whale, face many environmental threats including ship strikes,
entanglement in fishing gear, whale-watching and habitat degradation.
Ingrid will describe her current research projects and other hi-tech
projects conducted by the Bioacoustics Research Program at Cornell
University.
This presentation is sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Arts and
Sciences, the Biology Club and the New England Coastal Wildlife
Alliance (NECWA).
