The Center for Tropical Ecology and Conservation announces the annual
fall symposium:
Coastal Connections: Linking Research and Education in Tropical Coastal
Systems
Saturday, November 3rd, 2007
Antioch University New England
Keene, New Hampshire
Background
The Center for Tropical Ecology and Conservation (CTEC) is a non-profit
organization at Antioch University New England committed to supporting
education and research in tropical ecology, conservation and the
sustainable use of tropical ecosystems. CTEC works to create links
between New England and the tropics. Our objective is to help people
find creative, long-term solutions to the rapid loss of tropical
biodiversity in the tropics.
Purpose
The purpose of this symposium is to bring together researchers,
educators and advocates from New England and tropical coastal systems to
discuss contemporary applied research and how that research can be used
in the New England classroom. The symposium format is based upon two
major themes, education and research. The education section will include
discussions on best practices for incorporating tropical coastal systems
into the New England classroom. Lesson plans for these topics will be
available. Upon completion of the symposium continuing education
certificates for all educators will be offered. The research portion of
the symposium will focus on current applied research in tropical and New
England coastal systems. Participants will engage in conversations
regarding the scientific aspects of this research as well as the roles
of advocacy and education as it pertains to coastal systems.
Call for Abstracts
The Center for Tropical Ecology and Conservation (CTEC) is currently
accepting proposals for lecture, poster and panel presentations* that
address the following goals:
1. To provide conservation researchers and educators an opportunity
to discuss current topics in both tropical and New England coastal
systems including the degradation of water quality and the impacts of
coastal pollution on marine fauna. The potential impacts of global
climate change on coastal systems will be addressed in relation to the
above topics.
2. To explore current applied research in tropical and New England
coastal systems including but not limited to: the impacts of ecotourism
on marine mammals, coastal marine mammal protection and management
across state and national borders, coastal erosion and runoff and its
affects on marine environment and fauna, and the impacts of global
warming on coastal systems and migratory species such as birds and
marine mammals.
3. To investigate the role of scientists as educators and
environmental advocates in coastal tropical and New England systems.
Questions discussed will include: When is it appropriate for a
researcher to bring their data and knowledge to the general public, how
is a scientific advocate received by the scientific community and when
is it appropriate for a scientist to become an educator?
4. To discuss the benefits of bringing current tropical coastal
research into the New England classroom and to explore various
techniques and lesson plans.
