Experts to Address Local and Global Impacts of Climate Change
NARRAGANSETT, R.I. -May 31, 2007- Metcalf Institute for Marine and
Environmental Reporting is hosting its Tenth Annual Public Lecture Series,
Scientists and Journalists: Getting the Point Across, from Monday, June 11

Each year, Metcalf Institute invites acclaimed scientists and
environmental journalists to share information about key environmental
issues. Monday's lecture, by Ruth Curry of Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institution, will focus on the critical role of ocean circulation in the
global climate system. Tuesday, Charles Greene of Ocean Resources and
Ecosystems Program at Cornell University, will address the dramatic
ecosystem changes in the northern oceans due to unprecedented climatic
warming in the Arctic.
Cynthia Barnett of Florida Trends Magazine will present Wednesday's
lecture on development and overuse of critical water resources across the
nation. Thursday, Joel Scheraga of the Global Change Research Program and
Mercury Research Program for the US Environmental Protection Agency, will
discuss the potential health impacts of climate change.
On Friday at 11 a.m. a panel of alternative energy experts will argue the
possibility of achieving renewable energy goals. Panelists include:
Christopher Powell of Brown University, Moderator; Cutler Cleveland of
Boston University; Jeff Deyette of Union of Concerned Scientists; Dennis
Duffy of Cape Wind Associates and Energy Management, Inc.; and Dan
Valianti of Ceres.
The lectures held Monday through Thursday will begin at 3:30 p.m. and
Friday's presentation will begin at 11:00 a.m. All lectures are free and
open to the public and will be held at the URI Narragansett Bay Campus in
the Coastal Institute Auditorium.
Metcalf Institute was established in 1997 and named for the late publisher
of The Providence Journal, Michael P. Metcalf. The Institute was
established with funding from The Belo Corporation, The Providence Journal
Charitable Foundation, The Washington Post's Philip L. Graham Fund, and
the Telaka Foundation. The mission of Metcalf Institute is to promote
clear and accurate reporting of scientific news and environmental issues;
to strengthen understanding and working relationships between members of
the scientific community and members of the news media; and to provide
opportunities for beginning journalists to learn, on both a formal and an
informal level, how to improve their skills in marine and
environmental reporting.
