Presentation on Energy Trends
Wednesday, January 17, 2007, 7 pm Woods Hole Research Center
149 Woods Hole Road, Falmouth
Sponsored by the Cape & Islands Renewable Energy Collaborative
Dr. Cutler Cleveland, Professor of Geography and Environment at Boston
University, will speak at a meeting of the Cape & Islands Renewable Energy
Collaborative (CIREC). The presentation will take place at the Woods Hole
Research Center at 7 pm on Wednesday, January 17. The meeting is free and
open to the public; light refreshments will be served.
Dr. Cleveland also is a professor in the Center for Energy and Environmenal
Studies, the Pardee Center for the Study of Longer-Range Future, and a
faculty associate in the Center for Ecology and Conservation Biology at
Boston University. He looks at energy from an interdisciplinary and
historical perspective. He pioneered the concept of "energy return on
investment" for comparative analysis of energy supply and use options and
their economic, environmental, and social implications. His research focuses
on how energy and other resources are used to meet human needs, considering
issues such as oil and gas supply, energy policy, energy quality, and energy
transitions. He devotes significant effort to illuminating energy's central
role in human society, to improving energy literacy, and to increasing
understanding of relations between humanity and its natural surroundings.
In 2006, he received the Adelman/Frankel Award from the United States
Association for Energy Economics in "recognition of his unique and
innovative contributions to the field." In addition to serving as CEES
director at BU, he is a professor in the Department of Geography and
Environment, fellow with the Pardee Center for the Study of Longer-Range
Future, and faculty associate in the Center for Ecology and Conservation
Biology. He also is Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of Energy (Elsevier
Science, 2004), the Dictionary of Energy (Elsevier Science, 2005), the
Journal of Ecological Economics, and the Encyclopedia of Earth
(http://www.eoearth.org). He holds a B.S. in Ecology and Systematics from
Cornell University, a M.S. in Marine Science from Louisiana State
University, and a Ph. D. in Geography from the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign.
CIREC (http://www.cirenew.org/) was formed in 2000 to bring together diverse
individuals and organizations with common interest in achieving a
sustainable energy future, both locally and globally. CIREC participants
work together to build awareness of the benefits of renewable energy,
increase the use of clean energy technologies, and lay the groundwork for
transforming the energy basis of the Cape & Islands region.
The Woods Hole Research Center is dedicated to science, education, and
public policy for a habitable Earth, seeking to conserve and sustain
forests, soils, water, and energy by demonstrating their value to human
health and economic prosperity. The Center sponsors initiatives in the
Amazon, the Arctic, Africa, Russia, and North America, including the
Mid-Atlantic, New England, and Cape Cod. Center programs focus on the carbon
cycle, forest function, landcover/land use, water cycles and chemicals in
the environment, as well as policy.
