TAKING A CLOSE LOOK AT OUR SHORELINE
CONTROLLING COASTAL EROSION ON NANTUCKET:
PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
The Nantucket Civic League will host a public forum, "Controlling Coastal
Erosion on Nantucket: Past, Present and Future," on Monday, January 8 at
4:30 in the CPS Cafeteria.
Our featured guest will be Jim O'Connell, Coastal Processes Specialist,
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Sea Grant Program and Cape Cod
Cooperative Extension. Jim is a recognized expert on coastal erosion in
Massachusetts. He will help us understand the dynamics affecting our
island's shoreline.
Jim will also take look at various coastal-erosion control strategies, while
Dirk Roggeveen, Administrator of Nantucket's Conservation Commission, will
focus on those methods which have been used on Nantucket and explain the role of the
Conservation Commission in the permitting process.
.
In addition, we have invited local experts to be on hand to provide specific
information about how coastal-erosion control relates to concerns such as
public access to Nantucket beaches, local fishing and marine mammals. We
will also explore the role of our Conservation Commission in permitting
erosion-control projects, including the legalities involved from both the
point of view of the property owner and of the public. And, finally, we will
consider whether or not Nantucket is in need of an island-wide coastal
management policy. There will be ample time for questions and answers.
The Civic League is pleased and proud to co-sponsor this program with the
UMASS Field Station and Grace Grossman Environmental Center. Managing
Director of the Field Station, Dr. Sarah Oktay will moderate the discussion
along with former NCL President D. Anne Atherton.
Please plan to join us for this important forum. Everyone is welcome, as
together we take a look at the future of Nantucket's shorelines. For further
information, please contact the Civic League at ncl at nantucket.net or
