PCCS Sponsors Winter Lecture Series in Orleans

 

(Provincetown, Cape Cod, MA) - The Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies (PCCS) will sponsor three lectures at Snow Library in Orleans on Wednesday, February 21, Saturday, February 24, and on Wednesday, February 28.  The lectures are free and open to the public:

Wednesday, February 21

Whale Rescue Assistant

"Marine Animal Entanglements: Disentangling the Problem"

 

 

PCCS's world-renowned disentanglement team operates under federal permit to free large marine mammals from marine debris and fishing gear.  Learn about entanglement techniques and plausible solutions to entanglement issues from an experienced member of the team.  The dynamic relationship between humans and marine mammals will be explored.

Cape Cod Bay Monitoring Program

"Monitoring Water Quality"

 

 

PCCS began a long-term study of the water quality in Cape Cod bay in 2006.  Learn how pollution, eutrophication and habitat degradation affect our coastal waters.  The present health of Cape Cod Bay will be discussed and areas of particular concern to scientists will be identified by Dr. Costa.

Director, Right Whale Aerial Survey

"Right Whales: Today and Tomorrow"

 

 

The North Atlantic right whale remains on the critically endangered list with fewer than 350 whales remaining.  Dr. Jaquet will discuss research techniques such as aerial survey and photo-identification data.  Learn about past and present threats facing this critically endangered species.
