*SANCTUARY VIDEO SERIES STARTS WITH
PROGRAM ON THE PORTLAND SHIPWRECK
ON NOVEMBER 28*

An underwater mission to explore the wreck of the passenger steamship
/Portland/ is the focus of the first program in Stellwagen Bank National
Marine Sanctuary’s free Tuesday evening video series, beginning November
28. The Science Channel special was filmed in 2004 using high definition
cameras that captured astounding images of the ill-fated ship.

The /Portland/, labeled “New England’s Titanic,” was lost during a
ferocious storm in November 1898. Discovered in 1989, and first
documented in 2002, the /Portland/ is one of the sanctuary’s premiere
cultural resources. It was listed on the National Register of Historic
Places in 2005.

Each video in the 8-part series will be accompanied by a commentary from
a sanctuary staff member or a guest speaker. The first program will
feature the sanctuary’s maritime archaeologists Matthew Lawrence and
Deborah Marx.

Running every other week until March 6, 2007, the sanctuary’s Tuesday
evening video programs will include shows from Jean-Michel Cousteau’s
/Ocean Adventures/ series and an episode from Game Warden TV. For more
information about the video series, visit the sanctuary’s Web site at
http://stellwagen.noaa.gov <http://stellwagen.noaa.gov/> or call
781-545-8026.
