This fall thousands of Massachusetts residents will remove debris along
the state's shoreline, riverbanks, and seafloor as part of the
COASTSWEEP program. Sponsored by the Office of Coastal Zone Management,
and coordinated by the Urban Harbors Institute at UMASS Boston,
COASTSWEEP encourages volunteers to remove debris and track of the
numbers and types of items they collect. This information is sent to
the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) program.
The ICC gathers information from around the world, analyzes the data,
and uses the results to develop programs and policies to reduce marine
debris.
Marine debris is a global problem -- but by cleaning beaches and
riverbanks in Massachusetts, we not only remove debris from our state's
land and oceans, we also prevent it from entering the ocean currents and
affecting marine life in other parts of the world.
If you'd like to be a part of the cleanup effort taking place this
September and October, visit www.coastsweep.umb.edu, call 617-287-5570,
or email coastsweep at umb.edu.
