No need to worry about parking, long checkout lines, or lugging those
heavy shopping bags when you do your Christmas shopping with Woods Hole
Sea Grant! The items below are thoughtful presents for anyone interested
in our coasts.
Beachcomber's Companion©
Crago, T.I. and M. DiSpezio. Illustrations by T. Morgan. 2005. $16.95
per set (contact Sea Grant for quantity discounts). To order, visit
http://www.beachcomberscompanion.net/order.htm
Beachcombers of all ages, take note: there IS a way to identify the
critters you've collected at the shore! And you can do it without
bringing along a field guide that might get dropped in the surf!
Introducing Beachcomber's Companion©, a fun twist on the traditional
field guide. Waterproof and portable, Beachcomber's Companion© features
50 common Atlantic coast marine invertebrates, beautifully illustrated
(and scientifically accurate), and held together with a clip. Packaged
in a mesh collecting bag, each set comes with a special marking pencil
for the checklist card, so every critter you find on each trip to the
beach can be recorded--and wiped clean for next time! Cards provide
common and scientific names for each organism, along with classification
information, details on size, shape, and color, and where to look for
it. Fun and strange facts for each organism are also included.

Beach and Dune Profiling: Training in the Emory & O'Emory Rod Methods
O'Connell, J.F. (ed.) 2004, DVD. Approximately 48 minutes. Free
Understanding the dynamics of how beaches and dunes change seasonally
and pre- and post-storm allows coastal homeowners and community
officials to understand coastal dynamics firsthand and determine
appropriate and effective dune enhancement and restoration measures.
Beach and dune profiling is a quick, simple, and educational technique
to quantify and document the dynamics of beach and dune changes over
time. Furthermore, a beach and dune profile is essential to determine
the level of protection a dune may (or may not) provide from storm waves
and flooding, and with supplemental information determine the volume of
sand necessary to enhance storm protection to a specified level. In
addition, beach profiling is a highly effective educational tool that
includes the use of global positioning system (GPS), basic surveying,
graphing, and follow-up sediment size analysis.
Shellfish Aquaculture: Tools, Tips, and Techniques
Walton, W. (ed.) 2005, DVD. Approximately 2 hours. Free
This DVD provides an introduction to the types and methods of shellfish
aquaculture used by shellfish farmers on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Featured techniques include counting shellfish (both juveniles and
adults) and quantitatively assessing shellfish habitat. Additionally,
behind-the-scenes visits to nursery and grow-out operations highlight
innovations and tricks of the trade from Cape Cod shellfish farmers and
shellfish officers.
Diseases, Pests, and Predators of Concern to New England Shellfish Growers
Walton, W. 2005. Set of paneled brochures. Free
If you know a shellfish grower, harvester, or resource manager, you are
well aware that diseases, pests, and predators are issues of concern to
New England shellfish growers. Woods Hole Sea Grant and Cape Cod
Cooperative Extension have teamed up to provide information on these
topics in the form of three waterproof guides that can be used in the
field. The information provided in the guides is designed to help you
determine
which issue(s) you are dealing with so that you can begin to find a
solution, such as treatments, exclusion devices, alternative growing
techniques, siting and planting techniques, and control measures.
