The Republican War on Science, by Chris Mooney, will be the subject of a
lecture by the author at the Woods Hole Community Hall on Monday, November
14th at 4 pm.

Chris Mooney is a freelance journalist who specializes in science and
politics. He is the Washington correspondent for Seed magazine, a journal
devoted to the intersection of science and society, and he has written
articles for The American Prospect, Mother Jones, The Washington Post, and
Slate, among others. On his Weblog, “The Intersection”
(www.chriscmooney.com/blog.asp), he has posted comments on science and
politics almost daily for the past two years.

In The Republican War on Science, Mr. Mooney’s first book, he contends that
right-wing politicians have built institutions designed to discredit working
scientists and that the Bush administration has developed an unprecedented
hostility toward “the very foundations of objective knowledge.” It has
attacked stem cell research and denied evolution, and, he says, the most
“staggering example” of abuse is the White House’s editing of the global
warming section in the Environmental Protection Agency’s report on the
environment. Mr. Mooney further believes that the media isn’t helping the
situation, because, in trying to create “balanced” reporting, “journalists
repeatedly allow science abusers to create phony ‘controversies,’” even
though a particular issue is not an arguable one based on its scientific
merits.

Following his talk, Mr. Mooney will sign copies of his book, which may be
purchased at the event. Sponsored by Eight Cousins Bookstore of Falmouth,
the lecture is free and open to the public. The Republican War on Science is
currently available at Eight Cousins and elsewhere. For further information,
