The next lecture in the Woods Hole Research Center seminar series will be
held on Thursday, March 10, at 3 p.m. in the Harbourton Auditorium of the
Woods Hole Research Center, 149 Woods Hole Road. Two Russian scientists,
Alexei Yablokov, of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Vladimir Zakharov,
of the Center for Russian Environmental Policy, will speak on Russias
Environmental Health: Role of Civil Society. The seminar is free and open
to the public; however, seating and parking are limited and reservations are
required. Please call 508-540-9900 for reservations.
The public lecture is part of a two-day meeting at which a delegation of
experts from Russia and the Woods Hole Research Center will explore issues
of significance in Russia, including problems of economic growth,
environmental security and civil society, as well as broader issues
concerning the health of the environment. Also included in the Russian
delegation will be Professor Sergey Bobylev, of the Moscow State University
Department of Economics, and Professor Semen Avaliani, of the Russian
Postgraduate Medical Academy.
Over the course of their meeting, the Russian visitors and Center
scientists, researchers and policy staff will discuss
boreal/circumpolar-related forest issues, high latitude climatic disruption,
Arctic rivers, carbon and international environmental policy. The goal of
these discussions is to increase mutual understanding of these issues and
find topics that could be pursued together in the coming months. The Center
s Deputy Director, Dr. Kilaparti Ramakrishna, who has invited the Russians,
said that Russian environmental issues have always been a big part of the
Center's interests, ably led by [WHRC Director] George Woodwell and
scientists R.A. Houghton and Thomas Stone. The recent additions of Scott
Goetz, Max Holmes, and Josef Kellndorfer position the Center toward
increased collaboration with the Russian scientific establishment.
Currently celebrating its twentieth anniversary, the Woods Hole Research
Center is dedicated to science, education and public policy for a habitable
Earth, and sponsors initiatives in the Amazon, the Arctic, Africa, Russia,
Boreal North America, the Mid-Atlantic, New England and Cape Cod. The Center
s programs focus on the global carbon cycle, forest function,
landcover/land use, science in public affairs, and education. These
programs provide primary data on the changes in land use around the world
and the latest appraisals of forest trends that influence the global carbon
budget. Center staff work locally and regionally, assisting communities
with resource management, and internationally, promoting policies that
stabilize climate and protect the integrity of the global environment.
