Teachers Can Earn Graduate Credits or PDPs

Several organizations are teaming up to offer Charge Up Your Curriculum:
A Series of Workshops on Climate Change and Renewable Energy. Although
the workshops were designed for the Massachusetts Science and Technology
Frameworks for grades six through eight, all educators are welcome to
attend and adapt the information and activities for their own purposes.
Teachers may earn PDPs (no charge) or graduate credit ($110 for two
credits). The program runs Thursdays at Waquoit Bay Reserve Headquarters
in East Falmouth, from 4-8 pm, January 6 - Feb.3, with an additional
field trip and follow up session. Sessions may be taken separately or
together as a course.

Teachers can learn how to guide their students to conduct an energy
audit of their school, enter the Junior Solar Sprint (a national solar
model car competition), or make simple, low cost devices to capture the
energy of the sun. Participants will get training and future access to
lending kits on energy efficiency, renewable energy and the Climate
Change backpack. Mike Arquin from the KidWind Project will provide
teachers with the opportunity to make and take their own model wind mill
to test out their design ideas. Participants will see the application of
concepts such as radiation, convection and conduction by visiting a home
that's heated with the sun. The field trip destination is still to be
determined but potential destinations include the modern wind turbine in
Hull or the traditional wind mill in Eastham.

The course gathers the expertise and resources of the Cape Light
Compact, Cape and Islands Self-Reliance, Waquoit Bay National Estuarine
Research Reserve and KidWind and is supported with partial funding from
Cape Cod Community College. A downloadable flyer, description of the
requirements for graduate credit, correlations to the Massachusetts
Frameworks and registration materials for this and other graduate credit
courses can be found at www.waquoitbayreserve.org
<http://www.waquoitbayreserve.org/> . For further information, call
