Mass Audubons Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary Hosts Free Lectures on the
Nature of Wellfleet Harbor
Saltmarshes and Habitat Restoration
Thursday, October 7 from 10:00AM to 12:00PM at the Wellfleet Library
Mass Audubon Coastal Ecologist Robert Buchsbaum will explain the ecological
and cultural role of saltmarshes, Cape Cod National Seashore staff Evan
Gwilliams and Stephen Smith will present the latest data on restoring
Hatches and East Harbors in Provincetown, and Annette Grilli from URI will
demonstrate how animated computer models are helping to restore the Herring
River in Wellfleet.
Beaches and Coastal Change
Thursday, October 21 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM at the Wellfleet Library
Robert Prescott from Mass Audubon, Henry Lind from the Town of Eastham, and
Stan Humphries from Ocean and Coastal Consultants will present on the
geology and ecology of Cape Cods beaches, the effects of coastal
structures, and the potential of beach renourishement projects.
The Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, a 1,000-acre Mass Audubon sanctuary
located in South Wellfleet, has been awarded a grant from the state of
Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs Office of Coastal
Zone Management to implement a series of free educational programs focusing
on the ecology of Wellfleet Harbor. The area was designated an Area of
Critical Environmental Concern in 1998. The primary goal of these programs,
entitled The Nature of Wellfleet Harbor, is to educate the public about
the natural history and ecology of the area and to provide basic information
about the ACEC status. These field programs are also designed to lead up to
a conference that Mass Audubon is co-sponsoring with the Town of Wellfleet
and the Cape Cod National Seashore entitled the State of Wellfleet Harbor
on November 6, 2004 at the Wellfleet Senior Center.
These programs are free, but require pre-registration. For more information
