Waquoit Bay Reserve Goes National for
National Estuaries Day
Celebrate National Estuaries Day by participating in Estuary Live, a
live, free, interactive field trip over the Internet. Classrooms across
the country can choose to visit any of seven estuaries over the course
of two days, asking questions of the trained naturalist and educators
leading the expeditions. Field trip leaders will respond to the students
during the live broadcast.
Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Massachusetts will
broadcast live on the internet Thursday, Sept. 23 from 12:20 to 1:30
p.m. EDT. This program will explore the rich cultural traditions of the
Wampanoag and their use of the estuary. Joan Avant-Tavares, of Mashpee,
will host a traditional Wampanoag clam bake, created with the bountiful
ingredients gathered from Cape Cod's coastal waters. The clam bake will
tie the various program topics together while students are challenged to
answer such questions as "how is a clam like a tree?" and "how do
people's activities on the land affect the bay?". Mindy Todd, host of
National Public Radio's "The Point," will narrate the program and
interview scientists from Waquoit Bay Reserve and the Buzzards Bay
National Estuary Program as well as other local individuals who use the
bay for pleasure or a livelihood. Students are invited to submit
questions during the broadcast. Questions will be answered live, as time
permits. *
