Cape Cod National Seashore Acting Superintendent Michael B. Murray has

announced that the seashore and several local towns and organizations will

host a conference focusing on preserving community character in coastal

areas. The conference will be held in Provincetown on October 6 through 8,

2004. Topics include working waterfronts, preserving community character,

smart growth and redevelopment, and affordable housing.

The conference is an outgrowth of a 2003 Landscape Character Study

undertaken by the Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional

Planning at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, to explore the

complex interactions of people and places on the Outer Cape, both

historically and today. The purpose of the study was to provide the

seashore and local government officials, organizations and residents with

an improved basis for making decisions that ultimately will decide the fate

of the landscape character valued by all who live on the Outer Cape.

Participants and presenters will share case studies from across the country

that define and shape landscape character in seacoast communities,

participate in field sessions to study issues and potential solutions, and

learn about strategies for moving from planning to action in the four topic

areas.

The conference is being co-sponsored by the Towns of Provincetown and

Truro; UMass Amherst; the National Park Service Olmsted Center for

Landscape Preservation; the National Park Service Conservation Study

Institute; the Lower Cape CDC; the Cape Cod EDC; the Cape Cod Business

Roundtable; the Cape Cod Commission; and the Provincetown Chamber of

Commerce.

The conference will be held at Provincetown Town Hall. Registration is

$30.00. The conference website, where registration material may be

obtained, is www.umass.edu/larp/endless_summer.
