The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History is sponsoring the annual Stellwagen
Bank Christmas Bird Count with the Stellwagen Bank National Marine
Sanctuary and the Massachusetts Audubon Society. This is a wonderful
birding opportunity for both novices and experienced birders. The trip
departs from Plymouth Harbor on the Andy Lynn Boats at 7:30 am on Saturday,
December 18 and returns at approximately 3:30 pm. Participants will enjoy
coastal birdwatching as the boat leaves Plymouth Harbor and pelagic bird
watching within the Stellwagen count circle. Part of the circle comes
close to Provincetown, so there will be more near shore birdwatching on the
return trip to Plymouth.
Simon Perkins of the Massachusetts Audubon Society will lead the count, and
other pelagic bird specialists as well as marine mammal specialists will be
on board. In past years, whales have been spotted on the trip.
Participants are advised to wear warm clothing and bring binoculars and
their own lunches. The boat has a snack bar with hot beverages and snacks.
$45 per person. Call CCMNH at (508) 896-3867 to register and for
directions, or for more information. The Andy-Lynn docks near Cap'n John
boats in Plymouth Harbor. Look for the gaggle of winter plumage of scarfed
and bundled up roseate-cheeked two-legged humians.
Bird counts are enjoyable outdoor experiences that also help track bird
populations. Participating in a count can be an enjoyable form of "citizen
science, " which provides data that is useful to scientists who are
monitoring the health of bird populations and habitats.
