MASS AUDUBON HOSTING "CRAB CAMP":
SPACES STILL AVAILABLE FOR THIS WEEKEND COURSE FOCUSING ON HORSESHOE CRABS
South Wellfleet, MA. - Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is
offering a weekend course on horseshoe crabs. Scheduled for June 13-15 and
entitled "Horseshoe Crabs in Coastal Habitats", this active field school for
adults will introduce particpants to the ecology, life cycle, and human uses
of Limulus polyphemus. The instructors for the course are: Dr. Daniel
Gibson, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Biology and Biotechnology at Worcester
Polytechnic Institute; Dr. Robert Barlow of SUNY Upstate Medical University
and the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole; and Brenda Boleyn,
Professor Emeritus, Cape Cod Community College.
Acitivities include field trips in search of spawning and juvenile horseshoe
crabs, a lecture by Dr. Robert Barlow focusing on his research on horseshoe
crab vision, a tour of Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge to learn about the
horseshoe crab and shorebird connection, and a visit to the Associates of
Cape Cod facilities where they extract horseshoe crab blood for biomedical
purposes.
Cost of the weekend is $175 for Mass Audubon members and $195 for
non-members. Fees include instruction, transportation to and from field
trips, and one dinner. SPACE IS STILL AVAILABLE for this exciting course but
