Mass Audubon Sponsors Workshop on Vernal Pool Certification
=20
South Wellfleet, MA. -Vernal pools are shallow bodies of water that fill =
in the spring or fall with rain and snowmelt. They are important =
breeding grounds for spring peepers, wood frogs, spadefoot toads, and =
spotted salamanders. Because these ephemeral bodies of water dry up in =
the summer they can't support a fish population, thus making them very =
attractive places for amphibians to lay their eggs. But people who don't =
recognize their importance often overlook these "swampy" habitats. =
Vernal pools can be lost to development and mapping and certifying them =
can aid in their protection.=20
=20
Dr. Betsy Colburn, Bullard Fellow at the Harvard Forest, has been =
studying vernal pools within the Cape Cod National Seashore for several =
years. Dr. Colburn will be presenting a workshop on how to certify =
vernal pools on Tuesday, April 15 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. This workshop is =
sponsored by Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and will be =
held at the sanctuary's nature center located in South Wellfleet.
=20
Conservation commissioners and laymen alike are encouraged to attend =
this comprehensive workshop with Dr. Colburn to learn how to identify, =
certify, and protect vernal pools. A slide presentation and discussion =
will cover the natural history of vernal pools, the certification =
process, biological indicators, mapping techniques, and the laws and =
regulations that protect (and don't protect!) these unique habitats and =
their wildlife. Following the slide presentation, Dr. Colburn will lead =
a field trip to map and collect biological data that will be used to =
certify a vernal pool here on the Outer Cape. Participants are urged to =
dress warmly and wear waterproof boots.
=20
The cost to attend this workshop is $20 for Mass Audubon members and $25 =
for non-members. Lunch is included in the cost of the program. =
Registration is required and reservations can be made by calling the =
Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary at 508-349-2615.=20
