Salt Marsh & Shoreline Botany Field School on Cape Cod
Offered by Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary
August 13-16, 2003
About the Course: Enjoy a week of learning in the beautiful coastal setting of Cape Cod. The 1,100-acre Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary will be the base for our activities, but the beaches, dunes, and wetlands of the Cape Cod National Seashore will also serve as our classroom in which we will discover the hardy plant species that have adapted to the ever-changing coastal environment. Field trips to the plants' habitats will provide excellent opportunities to learn about the role of plants in the ecology of the region. Stroll the shoreline in search of seaweeds washed ashore and flowering plants that thrive on sandy beaches. Hike Great Island in Wellfleet to discover the plants of the dunes and tombolos. Cruise Nauset Marsh, the largest salt marsh on the Outer Cape, to observe its rich variety of wildlife and learn about human impacts on salt marsh plants.
About the Instructor: Ann Buckley, a botanist and private consultant, has taught summer botany courses at Marine Biological Lab in Woods Hole and co-authored the field guide "The Woody Trees, Shrubs and Vines of Cape Cod and The Islands."
Additional Details: Cost for the course is $220 for members of Mass Audubon and $250 for non-members, which includes instruction, boat and field trips, and one group dinner. Participants may need to provide their own transportation to and from study sites. Housing is available for an additional fee of $125.
