Free Lecture Series Focuses on Shellfish: Their Biology and the =
Shellfishing Industry

Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is sponsoring a free =
lecture series focused on shellfish entitled "The Secret Lives of =
Shellfish." The four talks, presented by local experts, will explore the =
shellfishing industry and the life histories of oysters, quahogs, =
scallops, and steamers. All talks will be held at the Wellfleet Bay =
Wildlife Sanctuary's nature center located off Route 6 in South =
Wellfleet. Registration is requested, but not required. Please call the =
sanctuary at 508-349-2615 for more information.

February 5 4:00 P.M. Shellfishing in Wellfleet=20
William Walton, Wellfleet Shellfish Constable will speak about the =
basics of shellfishing, Wellfleet's shellfishing industry, and the =
operations of the Shellfish Department.

February 12 7:00 P.M. The Life History of Oysters
Michael Rice, Professor and Chairman of the Dept. of Fisheries, Animal =
and Veterinary Sciences at the University of Rhode Island, will talk =
about the biology of oysters, as well as his research on the effects =
shellfish can have on water quality.

February 19 4:00 P.M. The Life History of Quahogs
Henry Lind, Eastham Shellfish Constable, will present on the biology of =
quahogs and Eastham's shellfish propagation efforts.

February 26 4:00 P.M. The Life Histories of Bay Scallops =
and Soft-shelled Clams =20
Diane Murphy and Dale Leavitt of the Southeastern Massachusetts =
Aquaculture Center (SEMAC) will give a joint lecture on the biology of =
bay scallops and soft-shelled clams.

The Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the west side of =
Route 6, immediately north of the Eastham/Wellfleet town line. Trails =
are open daily 8 am to dusk. Sanctuary admission is free for members; =
$5 adults, $3 children for non-members. Call (508) 349-2615 for =
information or to make reservations.
