ASSISTANT RESEARCH TECHNICIAN
for the 
Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve


FUNCTIONAL TITLE:  Assistant Research Technician

SALARY RANGE:  $17/hour for 1800 hours.  This is a one-year full-time contractual position that can be extended dependent on funding. No benefits. This position is contracted through the Urban Harbors Institute at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.

LOCATION:  South shore of Cape Cod, Massachusetts in the towns of Falmouth and Mashpee

OVERVIEW:  

The Assistant Research Technician will work at the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR).  The Reserve is one of 25 sites that make up the National Estuarine Research Reserve System, a federal-state partnership involving the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management. 

The mission of the Reserve is to =A1=A7work with communities to provide and promote improved understanding and stewardship of coastal resources through integrated research and education programs=A1=A8.

SCOPE OF SERVICES:

Under the supervision of the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve Research Coordinator and Reserve Manager, this position will be responsible for assisting the Reserve=A1=A6s research and stewardship missions of environmental research, monitoring and land management. These responsibilities include:







1) Assisting the Reserve=A1=A6s research staff  in:
=B2h Carrying out field and laboratory work for the Reserve=A1=A6s investigative research projects and environmental monitoring programs
=B2h Helping with the field work of research projects of visiting researchers 
=B2h Supplying, training and working with volunteer staff for our citizen monitoring groups
=B2h Data entry and maintenance for our monitoring and research databases 
=B2h Small boat operation 

2) Assisting the Reserve=A1=A6s stewardship staff  in:
=B2h Carrying out its sustainable land management programs, including:
=B2h habitat restoration
=B2h habitat and biodiversity inventories


3) Assisting other projects and programs as determined by the Reserve Manager


Preferred Qualifications:
	Applicant should have at least one to two-years of professional or equivalent experience in the environmental field. An undergraduate degree in Marine or Aquatic Biology / Chemistry, Environmental Science, Water Resources, Natural Resource Management, or related field is preferred. Familiarity and experience with small boat operation is a requirement.

A successful candidate should display a strong technical capability and willingness to learn, along with a physical ability to handle rigorous outdoor (and on the water) field work in all seasons and weather conditions. On the technical end, we prefer applicants with experience working in coastal environments and some knowledge of laboratory techniques, particularly water quality monitoring methods and equipment operation. Basic computer skills (Excel, Word, and web/internet facility) are a requirement. The applicant should like working with people as part of a team, have a strong environmental ethic and a sense of humor.
