Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve
FUNCTIONAL TITLE: Coastal Training Program Assistant
SALARY: $15/hour for 1011 hours. A minimum of 20 hours/week is required although the schedule can be flexible. The person hired needs to work during the regular work hours when other staff is present. This position is contracted through the Urban Harbors Institute, University of Massachusetts Boston. No benefits. There is a possibility of dormitory housing at the Waquoit Bay NERR.
LOCATION: At the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve located on the South shore of Cape Cod, Massachusetts in the towns of Falmouth and Mashpee

OVERVIEW:
The Coastal Training Program (CTP) Assistant will work at the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine
Research Reserve (NERR). The Reserve is one of 25 sites that make up the National
Estuarine Research Reserve System, a federal-state partnership involving the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental
Management.
The mission of the Reserve is to =C1work with communities to provide and promote improved understanding and stewardship of coastal resources through integrated research and education programs=C2.
The intern will assist in the development and implementation of the Massachusetts Coastal Training Program (MA CTP). The MA CTP is a joint partnership between the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (www.waquoitbayreserve.org), Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (www.state.ma.us/czm), and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Sea Grant Program (www.whoi.edu/seagrant), aimed at providing science-based information to coastal decision-makers. Coastal decision-makers are defined as anyone who in their day-to-day professional or volunteer capacity makes decisions that affect the health of the coast. Coastal decision-makers include state, federal, and local officials, scientists, legislators, landscapers, builders, realtors, and many others.
The MA CTP is strategically planning its training opportunities to provide needed training to coastal decision-makers in the manner most appropriate for each audience including workshops, round table discussions, conferences, distance learning, etc. Evaluation and planning for the MA CTP will be conducted on a continual basis. RESPONSIBILITIES
A person is needed to assist with these ongoing planning and evaluation activities. Anticipated projects include working with the CTP steering committee and Waquoit Bay staff to:
1. Develop a matrix of coastal training providers in an effort to identify overlaps in the training market, potential partnerships, and gaps in training (such as gaps in audiences, delivery methods, location, etc.). The matrix would be based on a completed market analysis plus additional research and would include identification of training providers, determination of topics and audiences, and a more detailed investigation on particular topics such as program location, timing, etc.
2. Assist the CTP consultant in an assessment of state and county level coastal decision-makers to determine their training topic and delivery preferences.
3. Develop and/or implement plans to evaluate training provided by the MA CTP. This would involve identifying and assessing evaluation techniques used by the other National Estuarine Research Reserves, the Sea Grant Programs, Gulf of Maine programs, and others. Techniques may include follow-up surveys with past participants, tracking of written material use, or observations during training activities.
4. Assist with training activities provided by the MA CTP. This may include assistance with workshops, development of written materials, compilation of an =C1experts=C2 database, preparation of web-based materials, or other activities.
5. Assist with the development of CTP outreach materials including brochures, fact sheets, and a WEB page.
6. Help market the CTP to other training providers in the state.
7. Attend steering committee meetings, produce minutes of the meeting, and handle meeting logistics.
8. Other duties as required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The preferred candidate will have had some experience and/or course work in coastal management, natural resources management, environmental policy, evaluations, communications, or community organizing.
A successful candidate must be well organized and able to handle many tasks at once. He or she should be a disciplined self-starter with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Familiarity with the Cape and Islands community and with state and regional coastal management issues is also important. Basic computer skills are a must. Familiarity and/or expertise with the Reserve=C0s software programs is desirable (Excel, Word, Pagemaker, Access). Advanced skills such as WEB design, graphic and layout knowledge would be a plus. The person we seek should like working with people and as part of a team. They should have a strong environmental ethic and a sense of humor.
